My practice, interdisciplinary in nature - moving between architecture, movement and sculpture - explores the relationship between spirit and matter. I am interested in how space has the silent ability to evoke sensations like reverence, awe, wonder, daydream. There is a profound presence of spirit that moves between space, body, subconscious and the cosmos. This is rooted in Filipinx cosmologies and influenced by the diasporic experience - both eliciting a heightened perception in how we exist in the world, as it relates to others and the universe at large.
I turn towards Filipinx cosmologies such as, loob and kapwa: a belief that all beings are interconnected, an extension of one another and for this reason alive. On a more personal level, the diasporic/transnational experience is another lens that accounts for having a sensitivity to the relationship between our body and the environments we move through. In navigating different environments, there is a collection of impressions that leaves its mark on us which we carry throughout our lives. I hope to capture and illuminate these sensations, impressions and memories throughout my work.&nbsp;
Materiality, a focus within my practice, holds memory and truth of the people and places that surround us. In the process of discovery through experimenting with materials, both natural and industrial, dynamic, fantastical qualities, otherwise hidden, are revealed. This approach in understanding materiality is the way in which I not only see but also hope to excavate the unassuming beauty in the world - people, places and things.
Sculpture/installation has the potential to become an architecture or site to welcome, through many forms, the transmutation of the unseen magick moving between us. For me this is movement, where the body is seen as a vessel to activate and respond to space, whether created or existing. This kind of activation invites communal gathering, ritual and ceremony, becoming a place of storytelling through the body as a way to transmute spirit in the form of collective healing.

NEIGHBOR’S STUDIO&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;JERSEY CITY, NJ

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 2024 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

The Birds Still Sing celebrates the story of Suellen Escribano–&nbsp; a rebel, artist and member of the New People’s Army, through the lens of daughter Yvette and granddaughters Candace and Sabrina. Suellen, a freedom fighter who, in standing for the liberation and economic stability for her people, relentlessly fought the Marcos regime in the Philippines during the 1980s. She spent her early adulthood organizing rallies with laborers and farmers in both the jungles of the north and mountainous terrains of Tacurong, Mindanao in the south. Although her life was tumultuous at times due to living in hiding from fear of being executed by the government, which left her no choice but to sacrifice being a present mother, Suellen continued to live a life filled with imagination and vibrancy that she inevitably passed to her kin.

This body of work, including a film by the trio and Kathryn Serrano, delves into the duality of heroism and martyrdom, exploring how such themes have reverberated through generations, shaping collective memory and personal identity. Through storytelling, interweaving elements of magic, temporality, and fantasy, The Birds Still Sing creates dialogue across time, engaging with the emotional landscapes forged by Suellen’s legacy of rebellion and creative expression as a way to bridge and heal generational divides.&nbsp;

SOLO EXHIBITION
CURATED BY GABRIELA MOSQUEDA
APARADOR CDMX

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

MEXICO CITY, MX

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

2023&nbsp;

Including recent and new works this show seeks to illuminate the sensations we carry with us when migrating from place to place. It is the feeling of waking up in the morning with light that enters through the windows; although the light, window and room change every time, the feeling remains the same. A continuous search to perceive the sublime and ephemeral of everyday beauty, using materialities from which these qualities would not be expected. This is a representation of how materiality acts as a vehicle to tell the story of people and place, specifically my mini-migrations from the Philippines, New York and Mexico.
The pieces within the show are celestial beings, activated through discoveries oof the varying materials. Moving from concrete to metal mesh, with moments of a mixture of both, there is a sensibility at play between the conditions of heaviness and lightness and the somatic affect it has on us, illuminating very different memories, daydreams and or imagined realities.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

This series expands upon the sensibilities of sublimity and sacredness experienced within space. Rooted in precolonial Filipinx elemental thought: all beings are extensions of others, nature and the cosmos, Figures of Intuition acknowledges the transcendental effects that nature has on us. In such moments, when nature holds a mirror up to us, we are confronted with ourselves, our deepest desires and fears. These figures in space are familiar to us, in their own distinct and nuanced essence. Wandering amongst them is as if we found ourself within a forest, trees magnificent before us; or a desert, cacti joyful in the sun. These figures are celestial beings, defining a new landscape to move through. We wander and admire the strange yet perfect beauty that stands before us. In each figure, we get lost in their familiarity, and they become a mirror to ourselves. We deepen into our subconscious, transforming us to highest transcendence. Within ourselves and the other figures hold nothing more or nothing less than the entire universe.

“bumalik” (Tagalog for “to return”), a durational performance installation that integrates a bamboo sculpture, movement, and sound, explores the psychological and socioeconomic challenges the Filipinx diaspora face displaced from their ancestral homes. Centering narratives of Filipina oversea workers and their children, - oversea labour accounts for more than 20% of the Filipino economy, of which 70% are femme - this piece excavates the complex experiences and emotions of migration and uprootedness: the disorientation/reorientation within environment and place, the duality that exists between racialized opportunity and oppression, and the internalized effects of hypersexualization and violence in the cis-white-patriarchal world. This interdisciplinary cast weave together intergenerational stories of the perpetual process of “reinhabiting the skin” in hopes to find a sense of “home,” amidst these challenges and traumas. Set within a bamboo sculpture, which in moments becomes a forest, nipa hut, seashell and cage, there is a constant activation of memory between the body, the sexualized, the natural, and the built. The intention of the interdisciplinary nature of ‘bumalik’ is to merge, acknowledge and give voice to the multidimensionality of Filipina diasporic stories and experiences that are otherwise erased, silenced or in the shadows.

LE / 1957
From The Immense Journey
&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A billion years have gone into the making of that eye; the water and the salt and the vapors of the sun have built it; things that squirmed in the tide silts have devised it. Light-year beyond light-year, deep beyond deep, the mind may rove by means of it, hanging above the bottomless and surveying impartially the state of matter in the white-dwarf suns.

<img width="2000" height="2509" width_o="2000" height_o="2509" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9f15a9a346e395667b6b4d0811b722b055f813700d5ed5914eaeaf061558b729/d.jpg" data-mid="228333805" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9f15a9a346e395667b6b4d0811b722b055f813700d5ed5914eaeaf061558b729/d.jpg" />

Yet whenever I see a frog’s eye low in the water warily ogling the shoreward landscape, I always think inconsequentially of those twiddling mechanical eyes that mankind manipulates nightly from a thousand observatories. Someday, with a telescopic lens an acre in extent, we are going to see something not to out liking, some looming shape outside there across the great pond of space.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Whenever I catch a frog’s eye I am aware of this, but I do not find it depressing. I stand quite still and try hard not to move or lift a hand since it would only frighten him. And standing thus it finally comes to me that this is the most enormous extension of vision of which life is capable: the projection of itself into other lives. This is the lonely magnificent power of humanity. It is, far more than any spatial adventure, the supreme epitome of the reaching out.
